Happy Monday everyone! And congrats to all of the Eagles fans out there on our huge win!! I hope you all are recovered and ready to take on the new week after all of the fun Super Bowl festivities. Anyways, as you can tell by the title of this post, today we are talking about why you should use primer in your beauty routine and what it does for your skin and makeup.
A lot of people who wear makeup feel that primer is a waste of money and an extra step that they can skip to save time. However, this could not be further from the truth. There is a reason why so many makeup artists and beauty influencers use primer on themselves and their clients. It really does have benefits and it should be a pretty crucial step in your beauty routine. I also will mention my favorite primers down at the bottom for you guys to shop!
A Few Reasons Why You Should Use Primer
Your Makeup Will Last Longer// This one is a given and one that we all have heard of at some point. Primer makes makeup last longer because it preps your skin for makeup application and acts as an adhesive for your products to “stick” to.
So if you need to wear the same look for a long period of time, or just want your makeup to last longer, find a primer that works for your skin type and you will be surprised how fresh your makeup will look even hours post application.
Primer Can Combat Skin Concerns // Not many people realize this benefit of primer and I think it is super important to be aware of. Primer can essentially act as a skincare product if used correctly. Of course you want to do your skincare routine prior to applying any makeup products, but if there is a specific skin issue that you want to combat right before applying makeup (for example – skin redness or dullness), you can find a primer that will cater to your needs.
My personal favorites are primers that add hydration to make my skin glow and look dewy, but I also love primers that have green tints to them to hide any excess redness I may have.
Your Skin Will Be Healthier // Makeup is not the best thing for your skin – we all know that. What some of us may not know is that it is even worse to apply makeup directly on top of the skin without a primer underneath. This is because there is no barrier between the makeup and your skin, so the products you use will slowly start to seep into your pores. Primers act as the barrier layer between skincare products and makeup products, ensuring that the makeup we wear does not penetrate the skin and cause breakouts.
They are huge aids in the quality of skin because they combat skin dullness, and ensure that pores do not get clogged. So make sure you are using one!
Some Personal Favorites
The Four Primers I Typically Use
If you read my post on my Natural Everyday Makeup Routine then you know I’m a big fan of the Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer. It completely smoothes my skin of any roughness, texture, or breakouts and helps my makeup look more natural instead of caked on.
If my skin has some redness, I usually opt for the Make Up Forever Base Correcting Primer because I feel that it does its job without drying out my skin.
For hydration, the Too Faced HangoveRx primer is SO good. It is made with coconut water and other skin hydrating minerals that really keep my skin from drying out throughout the day.
If I notice my pores being an issue, the Benefit Porefessional does an amazing job of filling them in and making my skin look healthier. Sometimes I even use this on days that I skip makeup because of how good it makes my skin look!
To sum it all up, primer definitely is necessary and important for the quality of your skin and makeup. If you do not currently use primer, ask for a sample of one from Sephora or Nordstrom and try it out – you may be pleasantly surprised at its effects.
If you do use primers, tell me which ones are your favorites and why you like them! I would love to hear.
Talk to you all soon xx
