My entire life I’ve had oily skin and have never really gotten a hold on it. I’ve tried mattifying primers, oil-free moisturizers, and matte foundations…nothing works. I apply my makeup around 7am and by 10am I’m a greasy mess. I was wondering if you had any tips for someone like me who struggles to stay matte for more than a couple hours. Thanks in advance!!
Having oily skin can be really frustrating to deal with and can even cause some insecurities depending on the amount of oil your skin produces. Genetics, the food you are eating, the climate, and of course your skincare routine all play a role how much oil is coming to the surface. Using mattyfing primers and oil-free foundations is a great start, but it is also important to remember that makeup only looks as good as the skin underneath it, so tweaking your skincare routine will help change your oil production the most.
Start out by using a foaming cleanser morning and night that thoroughly cleans out pores and removes any excess oil. Some great ones for this are Purity by Philosophy and the Boscia Clear Complexion Cleanser.
Afterwards, you should use a toner at least once a day. Toners are made to balance pH levels in the skin (aka reduce your skins need to produce so much oil) and get rid of any dead skin cells that may be on the surface. Some toners that benefit oily skin are the Clinique Clarifying Lotion 4 and the Mario Badescu Cucumber Cleansing Lotion. Shake the bottle, soak a cotton pad with the product and apply it all over your face. You will even notice the toner removing excess dirt on your skin that cleansers often miss!
And lastly, it is SO important to moisturize morning and night. Without moisturizing, your skin will start to produce even more oil to compensate for the lack of hydration, so even if you have oily skin you should be moisturizing. Using gel moisturizers is a good option for those who struggle with oil production. Try and stay away from heavier moisturizers as they will not absorb into oily skin as well as dry skin, and can even cause breakouts.
In terms of makeup, using powder products over cream or liquid is typically better for those with oily skin. And remembering to eat clean foods and drink tons of water will overall help your skin from the inside out.
Hope this helped girl and thanks for reaching out!
